Albany's heritage-listed skate park, The Snake Run, is turning 50, and it's a celebration of community spirit and the evolution of skateboarding. This iconic park, the second-oldest in the world, was born from the passion of local children and teenagers who raised funds to build it. Graham Macaulay, a teenager at the time, recalls the enthusiasm of the skateboarding community, with kids skating on roads, footpaths, and driveways. The desire for a dedicated skating area led to a grassroots fundraising effort, with the community selling raffle tickets for a new color television and even selling fairy floss and drinks at events. The result was a $3,000 donation, which, combined with support from local authorities, led to the construction of the Snake Run in an old gravel quarry in Mount Clarence, Albany. The park's design, inspired by surfing and the natural landscape, features a winding downhill track that mimics a surf break, allowing skaters to ride in either direction. The Snake Run opened in 1976 to a large crowd and quickly became a hub for skaters, fostering a sense of community and skill development. It hosted Australia's first National Skating Championship in 1979 and has since inspired skate park designs worldwide. Despite the shift towards ramps and bowls in the 80s, the Snake Run remains a testament to the sport's early days, and its influence continues to resonate. Graham Macaulay reflects on the park's impact, stating that it played a crucial role in the evolution of skateboarding and served as a stepping stone for other parks. As the Snake Run approaches its 50th birthday, it stands as a symbol of the power of community-driven initiatives and the enduring legacy of skateboarding.
