The Toronto Blue Jays are facing a potentially significant loss this offseason, as their hopes of acquiring star outfielder Kyle Tucker seem to be fading. Despite the team’s interest—highlighted by Tucker’s visit to their spring training complex—the latest predictions suggest he may choose to sign with another organization, which would undoubtedly be a setback for the Blue Jays.
However, there is a silver lining for Toronto in the form of prospect Yohendrick Pinango. Interestingly, Pinango was not protected during the Rule 5 Draft and fortunately went unselected, which bodes well for the Blue Jays’ future prospects.
As the upcoming spring training approaches, Pinango is gearing up to compete for a spot on the roster. Starting off strong, he has been showcasing his impressive skills in the Venezuelan Winter League. Analyst Tobey Schulman reported remarkable statistics: "Yohendrick Pinango in the Venezuelan Winter League: 22 G, 101 PA, .353 AVG, .424 OBP, .694 SLG, 1.118 OPS, 7 HR, 29 RBI, 12/21 BB/K. Despite being left unprotected in this year’s Rule 5 Draft, he was not picked, and he posted a 122 wRC+ between Double-A and Triple-A in 2025." This impressive performance puts him in a favorable position should the Blue Jays ultimately miss out on Tucker.
Pinango will need to prove himself against other contenders like Joey Loperfido and RJ Schreck for that coveted fifth outfield spot. His development story is particularly inspiring for the Blue Jays, showcasing the potential for hidden talent to emerge.
The Untapped Power of Pinango
Originally signed by the Chicago Cubs for $400,000 back in 2018, Pinango was not viewed as a standout prospect at that time. The Blue Jays acquired him along with Josh Rivera in exchange for pitcher Nate Pearson in July 2024. While his initial adjustment to the Toronto organization was challenging, 2025 marked a turning point in his career.
Starting the season in Double-A, Pinango quickly ascended to Triple-A, positioning himself just one step away from making his major league debut. In 84 games at the Triple-A level, he recorded a batting average of .235 along with 7 home runs and 47 RBIs. Overall, his 2025 season saw him hit .258 with a total of 15 home runs and 70 RBIs.
Since his signing as an international free agent, Pinango has significantly honed his batting skills. According to MLB Pipeline, he possesses considerable raw power that is still developing. The analysis noted: "A left-handed hitter, Pinango demonstrated solid bat-to-ball abilities early in his career but tended to chase pitches outside the strike zone, which resulted in inconsistent power. However, his recent improvements in walk and chase rates are promising. By adjusting his stance, he has managed to keep the bat in the zone for longer periods.
"In early 2025, his bat speed has impressed Blue Jays officials, allowing him to capitalize on inside fastballs while unlocking his raw power potential. Nonetheless, he still needs to consistently demonstrate this power at higher levels. A significant improvement witnessed this past summer includes reducing the number of harmless infield popups, thereby enhancing his chances of securing hits."
Once he reaches the majors, Pinango is anticipated to fill a corner outfield position.
Tucker's Likely Departure
Kyle Tucker stands out as the most sought-after free agent this offseason, and the Blue Jays have made their interest clear. Yet, despite their efforts, MLB insider Aailyan Mohammed of Newsweek has predicted that Tucker is likely to pass on the Blue Jays in favor of joining the New York Mets.
Mohammed noted, "Steve Cohen and the Mets aren’t going to sit idly by as star players sign with other teams throughout the offseason. The Mets are aiming to remain competitive, with stars like Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor already in their lineup. They are expected to return to their aggressive spending habits, potentially outbidding the Blue Jays by $30 million, thereby forming a formidable core with Soto, Lindor, and Tucker for years to come. My prediction is that Tucker will sign with the Mets for an 11-year deal worth $430 million, following a Blue Jays offer of $400 million for the same term."
Should the Blue Jays indeed miss out on Tucker, it would represent a significant challenge for the team's aspirations moving forward.
