Channel 4's CEO Search: Who Will Be the Next Leader? (2026)

Channel 4 is poised to appoint its next chief executive, with an announcement potentially imminent. It has been almost eight months since Alex Mahon stepped down, but the UK broadcaster appears to be closing in on a successor, with insiders suggesting a decision could come before Christmas.

Two names have emerged as frontrunners: Jonathan Allan, Channel 4’s chief operating officer and interim CEO, and Emma Lloyd, Netflix’s vice president of partnerships for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Some observers believe an outsider could still enter the final stage of the process.

Opinions inside the organization remain split over the leading candidate, fitting a recruitment process that has deliberately kept people guessing—even top Channel 4 executives have described it as a tightly guarded effort. Allan has been a consistent presence in the running list since the outset, and he publicly confirmed his ongoing candidacy at the RTS Cambridge Convention when asked if he was in the running.

Lloyd’s name surfaced only recently in a Sky News report, surprising many in the industry. She has spent four years at Netflix and previously spent 13 years at Sky, where she rose to chief business development officer.

Other potential contenders are thought to come from outside traditional television. For example, Paramount UK chief Sarah Rose had been tipped for the role but is now departing to lead Prince William and Kate Middleton’s charitable foundation.

Geoff Cooper, appointed Channel 4 chair in September, is overseeing the recruitment with assistance from executive search firm Spencer Stuart. A job specification previously circulated highlighted that the next CEO would guide Channel 4 into what’s described as the broadcaster’s most important phase in its 42-year history.

The question of who will take the helm is likely to be a hot topic at Channel 4’s supplier drinks event this evening. Ian Katz, Channel 4’s content chief who has indicated his own future is uncertain amid the leadership transition, is expected to address attendees.

Meanwhile, the industry’s leadership churn is evident in Mahon being mentioned as a possible replacement for Tim Davie as BBC director-general, a post whose applications close at month’s end.

Channel 4 was approached for comment.
