Earlier in the week, similar conditions led to the closure of the Trans-Canada Highway, with multiple vehicle crashes reported by the RCMP.
But here's where it gets controversial... During Friday's storm, Portage la Prairie issued 25 tickets to drivers who ignored the closures. The penalty? A minimum fine of $298 and two demerit points on their licenses.
And this is the part most people miss... The severity of these conditions has stranded numerous travelers, with some forced to seek shelter in community centers near Highway 1 over the weekend.
