Marcus Freeman Staying at Notre Dame for 2026 Season: Full Breakdown & Press Conference Preview (2026)

A recent report has reaffirmed that Marcus Freeman will continue as the head coach of Notre Dame through the 2026 football season. If Freeman's social media update from December 29 didn’t provide enough assurance of his intentions, the announcement made on Tuesday that he will hold a press conference on Wednesday at 1 p.m. EST in Notre Dame Stadium certainly reinforces this notion.

In case there was lingering uncertainty, ESPN's senior NFL insider Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday that Freeman is "still expected to remain at Notre Dame for the 2026 season." This aligns perfectly with Freeman’s earlier message on X/Twitter, where he expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming season by stating, “2026… run it back[.] Go Irish☘️.”

This news comes amid significant changes in the NFL; just hours before Schefter's report, Mike Tomlin announced he would be stepping down as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, adding to the list of open head coaching positions in the league as it nears the divisional round of playoffs.

Furthermore, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network noted during "NFL GameDay Morning" that teams interested in Freeman seemed to have overlooked his prior declaration about staying at Notre Dame. Although Rapoport didn’t specify which teams were still eyeing Freeman, he hinted that his name continues to be a prominent topic in the NFL coaching discussions. He remarked, "These teams that viewed him highly still believe there is a chance that he comes to the NFL. They see him as a top-tier candidate."

Details regarding any agreement Freeman may have solidified with Notre Dame this offseason have not been entirely clear. Sports Illustrated's Pat Forde reported on December 29 that Freeman had accepted a restructured contract extending through the 2031 season, placing him among the highest-paid college coaches. However, Blue & Gold could not verify if Freeman’s contract truly extends beyond 2030, which was the original end date agreed upon in December 2024.

On Sunday, Rapoport mentioned that while Freeman’s contract was indeed adjusted, it was not extended, leaving some questions unanswered. It’s possible that Freeman will clarify these contract specifics during Wednesday's press conference. Given Notre Dame's status as a private institution, they are not obligated to disclose full contract details.

This press conference will mark Freeman's first interaction with the media since the Irish revealed their 2026 recruiting class on December 3, coinciding with the start of the early signing period. According to the notice from Notre Dame’s athletic department, Freeman will be providing general updates to reporters.

So far, Freeman has not commented publicly on Notre Dame's exclusion from the College Football Playoff after they fell to No. 11 in the final rankings released on December 7. Miami, finishing ahead of Notre Dame at No. 10 with a record of 13-2 and having defeated the Irish 27-24 on August 31, is set to compete in Monday’s CFP National Championship Game against the top-ranked Indiana team (15-0).

Since taking over the reins from Brian Kelly in December 2021, after Kelly's departure to LSU—where he has since been let go—Freeman has achieved an impressive record of 43 wins and 12 losses in his four-plus seasons at the helm of the Fighting Irish.
