OnePlus 15R Review: A Bland Design with Hidden Gems?
OnePlus has a reputation for pushing boundaries, but the OnePlus 15R feels like a step sideways in terms of design. Gone are the days of truly unique OnePlus aesthetics; the 15R feels generic, a forgettable entry in a sea of similar-looking smartphones. The vertically stacked camera module, a trend OnePlus introduced in 2025, feels particularly uninspired here. The half-hearted extension for the flash on the 15R only adds to the sense of missed opportunity. It lacks the sleekness of the Nord 5 and the boldness of the OnePlus 15's camera setup, leaving it in a design limbo.
But here's where it gets interesting: despite its underwhelming exterior, the 15R packs some surprising punches. Let's delve into the details.
Design: A Tale of Two Editions
The OnePlus 15R comes in three colors: a refreshing Mint Breeze (pictured), a classic Charcoal Black, and an India-exclusive Electric Violet. This vibrant purple variant, dubbed the 'Ace Edition,' stands out not just for its color but also for its fiberglass back, a departure from the Panda Glass used on the other models. And this is the part most people miss: the 'Ace Edition' is essentially a rebranded OnePlus Ace 6T for the global market, complete with the 'ACE' branding subtly etched on the back.
In terms of size and weight, the Ace Edition mirrors the Nord 5 almost identically. The standard 15R, however, is slightly thicker and heavier due to its aluminum frame, while the Nord 5 opts for a plastic build. Both phones boast Corning Gorilla Glass 7i protection on the front.
Durability Upgrade: One area where the 15R shines is its impressive ingress protection. While the Nord 5 settles for an IP65 rating, the 15R boasts IP66, IP68, IP69, and even IP69K certifications, making it significantly more resistant to dust and water.
Display: Smooth and Bright, with a Refresh Rate Caveat
The 15R features a 6.83-inch LTPS Super AMOLED display with a 2800x1272 resolution, largely similar to the Nord 5. The key difference lies in the refresh rate: the 15R can theoretically reach 165Hz, compared to the Nord 5's 144Hz. However, here's the catch: these higher refresh rates are only available in a limited selection of games approved by OnePlus. In everyday use, you're capped at 120Hz, making the touted 165Hz feel more like a marketing gimmick than a practical feature.
The LTPS panel also means the display can't drop to 1Hz for power saving, settling for a minimum of 60Hz. On the plus side, the 15R ditches the optical fingerprint scanner of the Nord 5 in favor of a faster and more reliable ultrasonic sensor, conveniently placed towards the center of the display.
The display itself is excellent, delivering vibrant colors and impressive brightness. OnePlus claims a peak brightness of 3600 nits, double that of the Nord 5. While we did notice a slight increase in SDR content, the Nord 5 surprisingly outshone the 15R in HDR playback, despite identical settings. This discrepancy remains a mystery.
Charging and Audio: Impressive Speed and Sound
The OnePlus 15R supports blazing-fast 80W SUPERVOOC charging, allowing it to juice up its massive 7,400mAh battery in under an hour – a truly impressive feat.
Audio is another strong suit. The stereo speakers deliver rich, balanced sound, surpassing both the Nord 5 and even the flagship OnePlus 15 in terms of audio quality. The lack of Dolby Atmos support is a minor disappointment, but the OReality spatializing effect provides a decent alternative.
Verdict: A Mixed Bag with Potential
The OnePlus 15R is a smartphone of contradictions. Its bland design and limited high refresh rate implementation are undeniable drawbacks. However, its impressive durability, fast charging, excellent display (despite the HDR quirk), and top-notch speakers make it a compelling option for those who prioritize performance over aesthetics.
