Zoe Sullivan, a hiring expert, warns that many applicants are using AI to present themselves falsely. As a result, recruiters are drowning in applications, making it harder to identify truly qualified candidates.

"The manual side of the process has become overwhelming," Sullivan says. "It's difficult to discern genuine experience from AI-generated fluff."

And this is the part most people miss: while AI can help tailor your application, it can't replace the human touch.

On the other hand, Delmaire highlights a more successful strategy: using AI as a guide to prepare for roles you're a good match for. This approach involves tailoring your resume and cover letter to the specific job, with AI providing assistance, not doing the heavy lifting.

David Holland, a talent solutions expert, agrees. He says, "AI makes it easier to apply, but it's also leading to an increase in irrelevant applications. You need to use AI intelligently, not as a crutch."

Dean Connelly, a recruitment agency director, adds, "AI can produce tailored cover letters quickly, but applicants still need to bring their own perspective to the table. Otherwise, you're just setting yourself up for rejection."

The AI Arms Race in Recruitment

In response to the surge in AI applications, businesses are adopting AI too. Sarah McCann Bartlett, CEO of the Australian HR Institute, explains that employers are using AI to sift through the deluge of applications.

"AI makes the screening process more efficient," she says. "It helps employers focus on the most promising candidates."

Some companies, like Zip, actively encourage the use of AI in their recruitment process, seeing it as a core skill for the future. Even blue-chip consultancies like McKinsey are asking graduate applicants to collaborate with AI as part of their recruitment.

Holland believes that most medium and large businesses in Australia are already adopting AI in hiring, with the exception of some traditional retail and hospitality businesses.

"AI can free up time for hirers to focus on understanding the person behind the application," he says.

Delmaire's research supports this, with over 80% of businesses surveyed indicating they use AI in hiring, up from 69% last year.

The Limits of AI in Recruitment

While AI is useful for initial screening, Delmaire believes AI-led interviews are unlikely to replace human contact.

"Human connection is invaluable, especially in recruitment and HR. AI might be smart, but it can't replicate the personal touch."

So, as AI transforms the job market, the key for job seekers is to use technology intelligently, not as a shortcut. The human element is still crucial, and that's something AI can't automate away.
