Todd Murphy: Australia’s Spin Strategy Against England in The Ashes (2026)

The Ashes: Todd Murphy's Sydney Test Challenge

Australia's Todd Murphy is gearing up to face England's aggressive tactics in the final Ashes Test at Sydney. With Nathan Lyon's absence due to a hamstring injury, Murphy, the 25-year-old off-spinner, is in the running to play at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).

Despite facing intense pressure in the third Test at Headingley, Murphy emerged with an impressive seven wickets across the series, outperforming the rest of the Australian team in terms of average and strike rate. Murphy acknowledges the likely scrutiny he'll face, stating, 'They will be attacking against me, no doubt.'

The SCG, known for favoring slow bowlers, has seen three of its leading Test wicket-takers as Australian spinners: Shane Warne, Stuart MacGill, and Lyon. However, Murphy's selection is uncertain due to mixed weather forecasts and the limited impact of spin bowling in this Ashes series.

The series is on track to have the fewest wickets taken by spinners in an Ashes Test, surpassing the 21 wickets from England's 3-1 victory in Australia in 2010-11. It will also have the least combined overs of spin bowling in an Ashes series.

Murphy, with 22 wickets in seven Tests, has yet to play at home. He believes in the importance of spin bowling, stating, 'You're not thrown the ball just to take wickets; it might be to hold the ball for fast bowlers to rest and recover.'

The diminished role of spin in Australian Tests over the past decade, attributed to green pitches and a Kookaburra ball favoring seamers, has impacted Lyon's overs bowled in home series. England's dominance in the fourth Test at Melbourne, winning in two days, further highlighted the reduced impact of spin.

Only the third Test in Adelaide saw spin take center stage, with Jacks and Lyon sharing eight wickets. Murphy emphasizes the need for adaptability, stating, 'You've got to find ways to be effective and play a role as needed.'

Australia's training at the SCG on New Year's Day was interrupted by rain, affecting England's session. The tourists will make changes, with seamer Gus Atkinson ruled out due to a hamstring injury, and Matthew Potts favored to replace him.

Australia's T20 World Cup squad in India and Sri Lanka in February and March includes Test captain Pat Cummins, managing a back problem, and seamer Josh Hazlewood, returning from hamstring and Achilles tendon injuries.
