The Amenity Authority Committee (AAC) has approved a plan to change the turf variety on the greens of the Hilltop Executive Golf Course and the Silver Lake Executive Golf Course, both located on the Historic Side of The Villages. This decision comes after careful consideration and a shift in philosophy regarding the best turf for executive golf courses in the area.
During previous renovations, a different turf variety, TifGrand Bermuda, was chosen for these greens. However, resident and superintendent feedback, coupled with the expertise of the new Executive Golf Maintenance Director, Donald Jones, has led to a change of heart. Jones believes that TifEagle is the superior choice for golf course greens in Florida.
"TifEagle offers an unparalleled putting experience," Jones explained to the AAC. "Its finer texture and proven performance under intense management make it the ideal choice for golf enthusiasts seeking a challenging yet rewarding game."
But here's where it gets controversial: TifGrand, while shade-tolerant, is more commonly used on fairways and lawns. TifEagle, on the other hand, is the go-to choice for executive and championship course renovations, specifically for greens. It's a third-generation ultradwarf Bermuda grass bred with golf greens in mind, providing a tighter, finer surface that rolls true and smooth.
"TifEagle responds exceptionally well to the frequent maintenance required for championship-quality greens," Jones added. "It's a grass that's been developed to thrive under the demanding conditions of top-tier golf."
The adoption of TifEagle across Florida courses, including PGA West renovations, further solidifies its reputation as the gold standard for golf greens. However, not everyone is convinced. AAC Chair Donna Kempa cast the lone vote against the switch, perhaps sensing a potential controversy brewing.
