The situation in Yemen has reached a boiling point, with accusations of treason and military strikes threatening to plunge the country into further chaos. But here's where it gets even more complicated: the Saudi-backed presidential council has expelled and charged Aidarous al-Zubaidi, the leader of the UAE-supported Southern Transitional Council (STC), with treason after he failed to attend talks in Riyadh. This move has sparked a series of events that could deepen the rift between Saudi Arabia and the UAE, two key players in Yemen’s decade-long civil war.
Zubaidi’s refusal to board a flight to Riyadh for negotiations led to six other members of the presidency accusing him of undermining Yemen’s independence. The Saudi-led coalition responded by launching airstrikes on forces allegedly moved by Zubaidi to al-Dahle province, reportedly killing four people. The STC, however, denied these claims, stating the strikes were unjustified and that Zubaidi remained in Aden. Over the past few weeks, southern Yemen has teetered on the brink of a new conflict. STC-aligned forces, seeking to restore an independent southern state, have clashed with those loyal to the internationally recognized government. In December, the STC launched offensives to seize the eastern provinces of Hadramawt and al-Mahra, claiming it was necessary to restore stability and combat threats like the Houthis, al-Qaeda, and the Islamic State. While the UAE denied the presence of weapons, it agreed to withdraw its remaining forces from Yemen. Since then, government-aligned forces, supported by coalition airstrikes, have regained control of Hadramawt and al-Mahra.
To defuse tensions, Zubaidi and an STC delegation were scheduled to fly to Riyadh for talks. However, the coalition claimed Zubaidi fled instead, prompting airstrikes on forces he allegedly moved to al-Dahle. Coalition spokesman Maj-Gen Turki al-Malki stated that these preemptive strikes aimed to thwart Zubaidi’s attempts to escalate the conflict. But here’s where it gets controversial: the STC described the strikes as an unfortunate escalation inconsistent with ongoing dialogue efforts, while the presidential council issued a decree stripping Zubaidi of his membership and charging him with high treason, among other crimes.
